Bank robber has second thoughts

Police responded to a burglary call at the North Community Bank at 2335 N. Clark St. on the afternoon of Dec. 9.
Upon arrival, officers were told by staff at the bank that a man wearing a pink scarf and a hunter’s cap entered the building at around 4:15 p.m. that day and handed the teller a note demanding money. According to the teller, the note said that he wanted $100, $50 and $20 bills, with specific instructions to not include dye packs or “bait” in the bag.
The teller pretended that he didn’t understand the message and asked the man “What do you want?” The offender then said “Come on man,” and fled the store with the note in hand.
An FBI task force arrived at the bank shortly after and began an investigation into the incident. The man was described as a white male, possibly in his late 30s, weighing between 200 and 250 lbs. and standing around 6 feet tall.
iPad grab thwarted
At around 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 7, a 78-year-old man was getting off a bus at the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Schiller Street when he noticed that he was being followed by two men who had also been on the bus.
The men followed him to the 1400 block of North Astor Street, where they grabbed him and tried to take an iPad that he was carrying at the time. The man resisted and was able to hold onto the device, and the two suspects fled southbound on Astor.
Missing car
On Dec. 10, a woman parked her car on the 1400 block of North Kingsbury Street at around 10 a.m. When she returned later that evening, the woman found that the vehicle was missing. Police verified that the vehicle, a 2001 Buick Century, had not been towed.
Tools stolen from basement
A woman living on the 1900 block of North Sheffield told police that she arrived home on the afternoon of Dec. 9 to find that someone had pried open her basement door.
Police at the scene later observed pry marks on the garage door and saw that the backyard fence had been kicked in. The victim said that the offender took a hammer and ratchet set from the basement but that no other items appeared to missing at the time.
The woman told police she believed that the neighbors had a security camera but officers were unable to obtain a video footage by the time the report for the incident was filed.
Sex talk gets violent
A man told police that he had been attacked by another man on the afternoon of Dec. 10 after he questioned the offender’s sexual orientation.
The victim said he was socializing with a group of people on the 500 block of West Delaware Place when the attacker became angered by the conversation and proceeded to hit him in the mouth with a closed fist.
The offender, believed to be named “Dennis,” then left the scene. The victim declined to be treated for his injury.
Thief flings backpack, makes escape
Police are on the lookout for 19-year-old Devonshay Thurmond following a retail theft incident at a store on the 900 block of West North Avenue.
According to a police news release, officers were touring the area on Dec. 7 when they observed four individuals matching the description of a group that had been suspected of stealing items from the store earlier that day.
Upon being approached by the officers, Thurmond, who was part of the group, threw his backpack at the officers and fled. The bag contained several stolen items, which were returned to the shops, and the other three individuals were taken into custody.
According to the release, Thurmond is a known offender for several retail thefts in the area.
