Window smashed at hair salon

Police responding to a burglary alarm call at the John Crager Alternatives salon, 2167 N. Clybourn Ave., at 2:20 a.m. on May 6 arrived find the front glass door window smashed and a brick sitting inside the front entrance of the establishment. A woman living above the unit said she heard the crash and felt the structure of the building shake from the impact.

Near North High School site could add to CHA's portfolio as it rebuilds area

A shuttered high school near Cabrini-Green is changing hands, and the building is joining the growing portfolio of vacant property ready to be developed near the former public housing projects. The Chicago Housing Authority could reap the benefits of a land swap in Cabrini-Green that comes as part of a multi-tiered deal between the city and Chicago Public Schools.

St. Ignatius, Old St. Mary's to engage students online during summit

Catholic schools near downtown are planning on closing their doors during the NATO summit, but their public counterparts say they’ll stay open, albeit with more security. St. Ignatius on the Near West Side will be closed both Friday, May 18, and Monday, May 21, as will Old St. Mary’s in the South Loop and both of the Francis Xavier Warde School campuses in the West Loop and the Gold Coast. St. Therese in Chinatown will be closed only on May 21.

Bryan Jackson, a third grade teacher at the Latin School of Chicago, was presented with the Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching award Thursday. “All the hard work that my kids do is my inspiration to be a better teacher today than I was the day before,” a tearful Jackson said before his students and peers after receiving the award in his classroom earlier today.

“There was a farmer who had a dog and Bingo was his name-o!” Meet Bingo, a loveable 1-year-old Lab/Hound mix. This country boy came to PAWS Chicago from the farm fields of rural Oklahoma. Poor Bingo was missing an ear and had bb gun pellets lodged in his thigh. PAWS Chicago veterinarians were able to remove the pellets and also neutered, vaccinated, and micro chipped him for identification. Although he only has one ear, Bingo is in great health and has normal hearing. This social guy loves people and other dogs, and thrives on plenty of exercise and playtime. Now all he needs to start his new life in Chicago is a loving family!

Masked attacker

A 27-year-old employee at a Starbucks coffee shop at 30 E. Hubbard St. told police that she was opening the shop at 6:15 a.m. on April 30 when a man wearing a hoodie and a mask came up behind and startled her. The unknown man then attacked the woman, hitting her in the face and chest. A man who was passing by ran over to help the girl, at which point the offender got into a black Nissan sedan and drove away. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment.
