Police and investigators from the city’s Department on Aging are looking into an incident involving an elderly man who was allegedly attacked by a night desk clerk in his building on the Near North Side.
On the afternoon of Jan. 12, police arrived at the Marshall Hotel, 1232 N. LaSalle St., where they met with an Elder Abuse Investigator from the city who had received a complaint at around 10:00 that morning, saying that a resident at the hotel had been attacked overnight.
According to a friend of the victim, the 91-year-old man awoke at 3:00 a.m. to hear Robert Richardson, the hotel’s night desk clerk, knocking on his door. When the man answered the door, Richardson entered the room and then headed towards the front desk. According to the complaint, the victim followed the clerk and told him not to knock on his door at night, at which point Richardson allegedly produced a Louisville Slugger baseball bat and used it to strike the man in the hand, causing a laceration.
As the victim staggered, Richardson allegedly struck him again, this time ramming the butt of the bat into his cheek.
The victim then returned to his apartment and contacted police a few hours later. Upon arrival, officers put Richardson into custody on charges of aggravated battery of a senior citizen.
Richardson was carrying a bag containing marijuana at the time of the arrest, according to the report. A neighbor at the hotel said that the victim was hard of hearing and that there had been issues with Richardson at the building in the past.
Robbed or just forgetful?
After a night of drinking on Jan. 6, a San Diego man told police that he got into a cab and went to the 1100 block of North Rush Street around 4:00 a.m., at which point he realized that his wallet and jacket were missing and that he had suffered some injuries to his face.
The man said that he could not recall what had happened, having been heavily intoxicated at the time. The man contacted his credit card company and was told that no charges had been made to a credit card that was in his wallet at the time.
Man arrested on gun charges
Police arrested an 18-year-old man for unlawful possession of a handgun on the afternoon of Jan. 14.
At around 1:00 p.m. that day, an officer at a gas station on the 1200 block of North Halsted Street observed a man open the trunk of a black Acura and retrieve a handgun with a brown handle.
The suspect, 18-year-old Truman L. Brown of the 5300 block of South Racine Avenue, then entered a silver minivan and drove off.
Shortly after, another officer pulled over the vehicle and instructed the driver and a passenger, a 16-year-old boy, to exit the car. After being told to show his hands, the officer reported that Brown reached downward before finally cooperating.
The suspect was then put into custody. Upon searching the vehicle, officers found a Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol, along with $4,927 in cash stashed under the rear floorboard.
After being arrested, Brown allegedly admitted to be carrying marijuana on his person at the time and said: “The gun is mine, I don’t want anyone to take the blame for something I did.” According to the police report, Brown is a self-admitted gang member.
Man mugged at CTA stop
A 30-year-old man was waiting on the Grand Red Line CTA train platform at 11:00 p.m. on Jan. 9 when an unknown man approached him and stated “If you don’t give me your s***, I’m gonna shoot you.”
The victim handed over his wallet, which contained $10 in cash, and the offender struck him in the leg with a blunt object before fleeing. The man refused medical attention following the incident.
