At around 4:00 a.m. on Jan. 1, a man was talking on his iPhone while standing outside on the 700 block of North Fairbanks Court when he was attacked by two young men. The offenders reportedly punched the man in the face and grabbed his phone, wallet and keys.
As they fled, the man yelled out to them that he didn’t have any cash in the billfold and asked them to return it, along with the keys. Two other men who were with the attackers gave him the wallet back but held onto his Northwestern University student ID. At this point, two campus security officers arrived at the scene, but the man — under threat of physical violence from the offenders — told the guards that the men were his friends.
The three then relocated to a nearby convenience store where the victim gave each offender $5 in cash and told them that he wouldn’t give them any more money, reminding them that they had been recorded by the store’s security cameras. The suspects then fled on foot and the man contacted police. Responding officers looked into acquiring video footage from the store and the university. The man refused medical attention following the incident.
Purse-snatching at the pier
A 50-year-old woman told police that someone made off with her purse at Navy Pier on the afternoon of Dec. 29. The victim said that at around 3:30 p.m. that day she was exiting the pier with her family when a woman with a child came up behind her and distracted her by speaking loudly in a “strange language.”
As this was happening, an unknown suspect ran by and grabbed the woman’s purse before disappearing into a crowd. The victim said she was unable to get a good look at the offender, and when she turned back around the woman and child were gone. The victim’s purse reportedly contained $300 in cash, some jewelry and various ID and credit cards.
No description of mugger’s face
An intoxicated man who was violently mugged in the early hours of Dec. 24 told police that he couldn’t give a physical description of his attacker. At around 4:00 a.m. that morning, the victim, 27, was walking on the first block of West Huron Street when an unknown offender approached and began beating him with an unidentified object. The victim, who had been drinking, lost consciousness during the attack.
A few hours later, the man said he came to while riding in a cab that was transporting him to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center on the West Side. At that point, the victim realized that his wallet, which contained $120 in cash and various credit cards, was missing.
After being treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital, the man contacted his credit card company and was told that that unauthorized charges in excess of $2,000 had been made on his cards throughout the course of a dozen transactions. Upon reporting the incident later that afternoon, the man told police that he had no recollection of the attacker’s physical description.
Thief nabs phone, bus pass
A woman was standing at a bus stop on the 900 block of North Michigan Avenue on the evening of Dec. 26 when an unknown man grabbed an iPhone from her hands and fled northbound toward Walton Street.
The man, who was wearing a red and white hooded sweatshirt and a blue skullcap at the time of the incident, also made off with her seven-day CTA pass, the woman later told police.
More apple pickers
A woman from San Antonio told police that she was walking on the 500 block of North Michigan Avenue on the afternoon of Jan. 1 when an unknown male teen ran up from behind and grabbed an iPhone from her hands.
The offender then joined a group of about five other youths and the group descended a set of stairs down to Lower Wacker Drive. Police toured the area but were unable to locate the offenders, and an attempt to locate the phone via GPS tracking was unsuccessful.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
