Thieves snuck in overnight between Jan. 16 and 17 and stole the ambiance from a bar in River North.
On the afternoon of Jan. 17, police met with the owner of the Green Door Tavern, 678 N. Orleans St., who stated that sometime between that morning and the previous day thieves had entered the premises through a knocked-out basement window and stolen a collection of furnishings from the bar, including some antique liquor bottles and cigar boxes, an antique slot machine, stereo and TV equipment and several pieces of artwork.
The owner added that some of the artwork left in the bar had been damaged. The victim identified some items in the bar that he believed had been moved by the offenders and officers ordered the objects to be checked for fingerprints.
Call waiting
A woman told police on Jan. 22 that she had been walking on the first block of East Ontario Street when an unknown male suspect ran up behind her and grabbed the iPhone out of her hands.
The offender, believed to be in his late teens and sporting dreadlocks, then fled westbound and got into a gray vehicle in which he made his escape.
The woman, 33, stated that the incident had occurred on Dec. 5. When asked why she didn’t report the incident earlier, the victim said she assumed that the phone wouldn’t be recovered.
Kindle-napper
A 26-year-old woman was waiting on the platform at Clark/Division CTA train station on the evening of Jan. 18 when a man pushed her to the ground and grabbed her Kindle before fleeing up the stairs. The woman suffered a bruised leg as a result of the incident but refused medical attention. The device was valued at $225.
A bit cold to be gardening
Police arrested Calvin Royal, of the 1300 block of North Cleveland Avenue, for lifting some gardening equipment from a neighbor’s garage on Jan. 23.
At around 7:00 p.m. that day, police responded to a robbery call at a residence on the street, where a neighbor stated that they had seen a man wearing a dark jacket take a pair of pruning shears and a yellow garden lopper from an abutting garage and flee down the alley.
Officers patrolled the area and eventually spotted a man matching the witness’s description and carrying gardening tools entering a Dominick’s grocery store at 424 W. Division St.
Upon being interviewed by police, Royal, 55, told police that he had found the equipment in an alley off of Cleveland Avenue. Officers took Royal back to the residence, where the witness identified him as the person who had taken the tools.
Royal was then placed under arrest and the stolen property was returned to the owner, who told police that they had left the residence directly before the incident occurred.
Robbery behind bank
On the afternoon of Jan. 22, a 77-year-old man had just gotten off a bus on the 1500 block of North Clybourn Avenue and was heading home when two unknown men stopped him behind a Bank of America building and demanded that he give them his money.
The man stated that he had nothing, but upon searching his pockets the offenders found $320 in cash. The men took the money and told the victim to “get out of here.” The man returned home and contacted police. Officers toured the area but were unable to locate the suspects.
Armed robbery in Old Town
A 21-year-old woman told police that she was walking southbound on the 1800 block of North Clark Street on the morning of Jan. 22 when she heard footsteps coming from behind her.
She turned around to find a man pointing a handgun at her. The man, believed to be around 30-years old, told the woman to drop everything. The woman complied, placing a faux fur jacket, a purse and her keys on the ground. The man then took the purse, and fled northbound, leaving the other items. The victim went back to her nearby home and contacted police.
This summary contains information taken from the crime reports and arrest records of the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated
