An elderly couple was the victim of a burglary at their home on the 2000 block of North Halsted Street the afternoon of Jan. 30.
At around 2:45 p.m. that day, a 94-year-old man told police that a man had knocked on his patio door a few hours earlier, stating that he was there to take measurements for some “fence work.”
Confused, the man proceeded to help the stranger take the measurements when he saw a second man exiting through the patio door. The two men, who were both carrying walkie-talkies, then fled the residence.
Upon reentering his home, the victim found that the offender had taken a gold watch from his second floor bedroom. The suspect had also gone through his wives jewelry, though no further items were reported stolen.
The man told police that the watch was engraved with the initials “WGN”, along with the man’s birthday. A responding officer recalled a similar report a few weeks earlier in which two men matching the suspects’ descriptions entered a home on the 1000 block of West Webster Avenue.
Never talk to strangers
At around 3:15 a.m. on Jan. 29, a 25-year-old man was walking on the first block of West Hubbard Street when two individuals in a white four-door car drove up and asked him for directions.
The victim, who had been drinking, walked closer, at which point one of the men grabbed him by the jacket and demanded his wallet. The man complied and handed over his wallet, from which the offender removed his ATM card.
The suspect then asked for his PIN number, and the man gave it to him, in return for his wallet. The offenders then drove off. The victim later found that the offenders had made $200 in charges to the card.
Kicking, screaming and biting
Officers arrested Lisa Brooks, of the 7600 block of South Wood Street, for violently resisting arrest after she was kicked out of a River North nightclub at 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 28.
According to a report, Brooks, 23, was being escorted out of the Boutique Club, 1332 N. Halsted St., for causing a disturbance earlier that evening when she began striking the security guard who was seeing her out.
Officers arrived at the scene shortly after and found the offender yelling and trying to get back into the club, at which point they attempted to handcuff her. During this process, Brooks bit one of the officers on the hand and kicked another in the leg, before being cuffed and placed inside a police car.
Club fight escalates
Joshua N. Martineck, of the 4400 block of North McVicker Avenue, found himself behind bars after instigating a fight outside of a nightclub at around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 28.
After being removed from Nikki’s Club, 1543 N. Kingsbury, for causing a disturbance with his friends, Martineck, 24, reportedly became physical with security guards and shoved one individual.
A witness tried to intervene, at which point Martineck produced a 3-inch blade and swung it at the individual, missing his face. The offender then used the handle of the knife to strike the man on his left eye and about his head. During this altercation, he shoved another person into a car and shattered the rear window of the vehicle.
Police arrived and arrested the Martineck, who while in the squad car allegedly made racist and threatening remarks to the officers and stated that his mother was a judge and that he was going to evade charges from the incident. The offender was found to be carrying $350 in cash at the time of his arrest.
Missing jewelry
A resident on the 1100 block of West Armitage Avenue told police that a few pieces of jewelry had been taken from her home while she was out. The woman, 37, said that she had left her home at around 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, and when she returned at 7:20 p.m. that evening found that two articles of jewelry were missing from the residence. One item, which contained a diamond and a purple stone, was valued at $3,000.
n This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
