A 39-year-old man suffered a stab wound after a violent encounter with a group of men after midnight on June 23. The man told police that he was walking in the 100 block of West North Avenue when four men - some of whom were believed to be in their twenties - approached him and demanded that he hand over his possessions.

An unsuccessful purse-snatching attempt at North Avenue Beach landed three suburbanites in custody on June 19. On that afternoon, a group of men approached Joseph D. Schaber, of Brookfield, after they allegedly witnessed him pick up a woman’s purse and put it in his backpack. Schaber, 22, was accompanied by Adam Colon, 36, also from Brookfield, and Christine Hudnut, 18, of La Grange Park.

Police and community leaders are urging near North Side residents to stay vigilant against crime both on their streets and in the courts. Shaken by a recent string of violent robberies and "mob actions" involving groups of offenders that resonated throughout the city's lakefront area, neighbors in the North Side neighborhood met with community police from the 19th District and Ald. Michele Smith (43rd) on Monday night to discuss the finer points of crime prevention in their ward.

On the evening of June 7, two boys were walking from Oak Street beach when they noticed that they were being followed by a group of about ten teenagers. One of the boys from the group, allegedly 18-year-old Keith Alexander, walked up alongside the victims, at which point one of them asked Alexander if he could buy a cigarette from him.

An employee of the Regal Cinema at 1471 W. Webster Ave. told police that at around 9:00 p.m. on June 1, a man entered the theater and asked to have a twenty dollar bill changed.

Knocked out and robbed

A man was attacked and robbed in the first block of West Division Street during the early morning of May 28. After attending a number of bars that previous evening, the man, 27, told police that at around 4:30 a.m. he was approached on the street by two or three men who demanded that he hand over his belongings.
