An 80-year-old man living in the 500 block of West Delaware Street was the victim of a violent home invasion on Dec. 14.
The victim told police that at around 1:30 a.m. a man knocked on his door and asked him for a dollar. When he turned to get the money, he said, the man put on a black mask and entered his home with two other unidentified men.
The offenders then put a knife to the man’s throat, forced him to the floor and tied his arms and feet before looting his home, taking about $250 in cash from various locations in the house along with several bottles of liquor from his bar.
The men then interrogated the victim, stabbing him in the legs, punching him and stomping on his face with a pillow over it while asking if there was any more money in the house. The offenders eventually left, and the victim went to a neighbor’s house to contact police.
Failed break-in
Police responding to a burglary alarm found signs of a failed break-in at a bar in the 1300 block of West Fullerton. Upon arrival on the morning of Dec. 19, officers found pry marks near the dead bolt and a glass pane smashed on the front door, but a bartender at the scene said that he did not believe anything had been moved and stolen.
Late night robbery
At 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 18, a 26-year-old man was attacked and robbed by two unknown suspects after exiting a bar in the first block of West Division Street. The victim told police that one of the offenders battered him while they took his belongings — which included an iPhone, a credit card and $35 cash — before fleeing. The suspects managed to make several purchases with the card before it was cancelled, the man said.
Purse snatching thwarted
A couple arriving home grew suspicious when they saw two unknown suspects trailing a 20-year-old woman walking in the 2300 block of North Kenmore. They watched as one of the men approached the victim from behind and knocked her over, at which point the husband started to yell and run after the offenders.
The offenders tried unsuccessfully to take the woman’s purse and fled as the man approached. The victim said she had been temporarily knocked unconscious and was unaware of what had happened. The incident occurred at 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 16.
Garage break-in
A man told police that his garage had been broken into during the morning of Dec. 14. The man, who lives in the 300 block of West Goethe, said several items had been taken, including a bicycle valued at $5,000, two children’s bikes and more than $2,000 worth of tools. Police ordered a fingerprint search of the scene.
Cadillac robbers
At around 11 p.m. on Dec. 19, police were flagged down in 1400 block of North Kingsbury by a man who claimed that he had just been robbed by three men in a Cadillac.
The victim said that the men took several pieces of jewelry, valued at more than $3,000 along with his ID and credit cards. The victim was able to relay to police the temporary license plate number from the offenders’ car.
