A good Samaritan assisted police in apprehending Tyrone C. Daniel, of 9133 S. Cottage Grove, after he looted a Gold Coast gift shop, on the morning of Nov. 20.
Daniel, 39, allegedly entered a Travel Traders store at 140 E. Walton Street and asked for the manager. The front desk clerk said that the manager was out and Daniel then requested a piece of paper. She gave him a sheet, on which he wrote that he was carrying a loaded gun.
The offender held up his hand inside his coat and said “I have a gun. Before I kill you give me the money.” The cashier stated that she didn’t have a key to the register, at which point Daniel went around the counter and put his left arm around her neck and said “I don’t want to hurt you, just give me the money.”
The employee opened the register and Daniel grabbed all of the money in the drawer. At this point, Daniel pushed the victim into the backroom and forced her to the floor, where he tied her wrists with the straps of her purse and bound her ankles with an electrical cord. Daniel then closed the door and fled the store.
The employee was able to free herself from the ties and pursued Daniel into the hallway of the Drake Hotel. As she gave chase, the victim screamed “He took my money!”
A nearby parking valet heard her and pursued Daniel out of the hotel, where he was able to grab the offender by the coat. Daniel did not struggle with the man, and they went back inside where he was detained by a security guard who contacted police.
Once in custody, Daniel told officers that he had no intention of hurting the cashier, explaining that he had been awake and smoking crack cocaine for three days straight and needed the money. The victim told police that she had seen the man in the store the previous day.
According to the police report, Daniel made the following unsolicited statement to an officer, while being transported to headquarters: “She tricked me. After I tied her up she was crying, saying it hurt. I didn’t want to hurt her, but I guess I didn’t tie her up good enough because she got out and came after me.”
