A man from Tucson, Arizona and a Chicago woman were exiting a restaurant on the 800 block of N. Kingsbury at around 1:00 a.m. on November 10, when the couple was approached by four young men. One of the men shoved the man and said, “Where do you think you’re going?” He then grabbed the victim, pulled out a small comb with a metal blade at the end and held it to his neck, demanding that the man hand over all his money. The man produced his wallet and threw it on the ground. As one of the men went to pick it up, another turned to the woman and said “Come here.” The woman panicked and ran south down the street, where she called 911. The men took off in the other direction but were apprehended minutes later by police officers responding to the call. The offenders were arrested on a signed complaint by the man, who refused medical treatment for a small cut on his neck. Police were unable to recover the man’s wallet.
Real heist
A man was checking his mailbox after entering his apartment building on the 1200 block of N. Clybourn when he noticed that a stranger exiting the building was carrying a familiar-looking duffel bag. The man rushed upstairs to find that his front door was ajar. He then ran outside and caught up with the man, who started to run. The victim gave chase but eventually lost him. A witness later told police that the offender had run into a grocery store down the street. The victim said the man had stolen over $6,000 worth of items from his house, including a pair of diamond earrings worth $2,500. The incident occurred in the early evening of November 10.
Close call
An elderly woman living on the 1400 block of N. Lake Shore Drive received a phone call at around 1:00 a.m. on November 10 from a woman claiming to an investigator who said that her credit card had been fraudulently used to make $4,000 in purchases. The woman on the phone asked the victim for her personal information, including her address, social security number and numbers for her other credit cards, then told the woman to put her credit cards in an envelope and bring them downstairs for someone to come and pick up. The woman complied and met someone downstairs, but decided not to hand over the cards. She later called her credit card company, who said that her account had not been used and advised her to call the credit bureau to report the incident.
Gang shots
An eighteen-year-old boy was shot in the leg after his friends exchanged some words with another group of kids walking home from school on November 10. The boy, who attends Lincoln Park High School, was turning the corner when he heard shots being fired, and looked to find that someone from the other group was shooting at his group. He began to run, at which point he noticed a pain in his leg. The shooter fled, and the boy was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police suspect that the offender might be a resident of the last occupied Cabrini-Green apartment block.
Drinker gets robbed
After having a few cocktails on the evening of November 10, a 22-year-old man boarded a train at the Kinzie station. After falling asleep on the train, he woke to find a man going through his pockets. The offender pushed the man to the floor and exited the train, making off with his wallet, which contained some credit cards and an ID.
Laptop stolen
Two 44-year-old men were arrested on the evening of November 9 for attempting to steal a laptop from a visitor at Water Tower Place. Police responded to a call from someone who had watched the men as they took the computer from the bag of an unsuspecting victim sitting at a table on the second floor of the building’s shopping center. The witness followed the men downstairs and pointed them out to an arriving police officer, who detained both offenders and put them into custody.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
