An elderly woman was robbed while in her home on the 2300 block of N. Bosworth by four men at 3:25 p.m. on October 2. The woman, a retired grocery store clerk, told police that the men kicked in her back door and ransacked her apartment, taking $9000 in cash that they found in a vacuum bag. The woman said that when she tried to call police, one of the men pushed her over and unplugged the phone. When the woman finally managed to call the police she said that the men were still in the building, but they had fled by the time officers arrived.
Liquor and guns
A man was driving on the 0-100 block of W. Ohio at around 10 p.m. on October 8 when four men got into his car as he was stopped at a red light. The man in the front passenger seat, who was holding a vodka bottle and displaying a handgun, told the driver, “Come on, we’re cool, we just need some money, we’re homeless.” The victim handed over his iPhone and $80 cash as he continued to drive. He then pulled over and told the men to get out. The victim asked for his phone back, to which the man refused, stating that he would have to give him more money.
Slow car jack
A 46-year-old man was the victim of a vehicular hijacking on the evening of October 6. “Just drive,” said the offender, a man who looked to be about 30-years old, as he climbed into the passenger seat of the victim’s car while stopped at a stop sign on 200 block of W. Eugene. The offender displayed a knife and told the victim that he lived in the neighborhood. After a while, the offender told the man to pull over and get out, to which the victim complied, and he got in the driver’s seat and drove away.
Violent
At around 11 p.m. October 10, a taxi driver said that his car, which was parked on the 700 block of N. Kingsbury, was approached from the passenger side by a young man. When he got out too confront the person, the driver saw that a second offender had snuck around the car and was opening the driver’s side door. The man went to stop him, to which the offender took a gun and said “Step back b***h.” The two offenders got in the car and fled.
Citizen’s arrest
A man walking on the 400 block of N. City Front Plaza at 11:35 p.m. on October 6 was approached by two men who said they wanted to see the playlist on his iPhone. One of them took the phone and asked if he could call his cousin, to which the man said he could not, and the two offenders fled down the street. The man chased them and managed to tackle the man who had taken his phone, valued at $700, but upon searching him he found that the suspect did not have it. The man held the suspect on the ground until police arrived.
Apple burgled
Police responded to a burglary call at an Apple store on the 600 block of N. Michigan at 3:10 a.m. on October 9. When they arrived, officers saw a man standing next to a broken window at the front of the store. Spotting the police, the man got into the backseat of a car with another suspect at the wheel. The two drove off but were quickly pulled over and arrested by the officers. Inside the car, the officers found an iPad and saw that there was blood on the backseat, presumably from cuts that the man had sustained from reaching into the broken store window. A doorman from a nearby hotel told police that he witnessed the man break the window and steal the merchandise. The getaway car was uninsured.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
