Two women from Columbia, Mo., ages 56 and 73, were walking in the 600 block of North Wells Street at around 2 p.m. on Sept. 25, when the younger woman, who was walking ahead, heard the other scream.

When she turned around, the woman saw her friend on the ground with a man, later identified as 23-year-old Rahil Malik, allegedly standing over her.

According to the police report, the victim told police that Malik, a resident of 6746 N. Whipple St., had one hand behind his back at the time and repeatedly told her “I have a gun, now give me your purse.” The woman complied, and Malik took the purse and fled westbound on Huron Street.

Another woman, who had witnessed the incident, called police, while a man who had come over after hearing the scream got in his car and began touring the area in search of Malik. A few minutes later, the man saw the offender enter a bike shop in the 200 block of West Erie Street. He exited the vehicle and followed Malik into the store, where he attempted to detain Malik. A brief struggle ensued, but Malik escaped by wriggling out of his shirt while the man held onto it.

Malik again fled but was tackled by another witness, who, with the help of the other man, subdued Malik by tying his hands behind his back with a belt. The men then retrieved the contents of the purse, which included a cellphone and a wallet, and gave them back to the woman.

Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after and put Malik into custody. The woman’s purse was later found in an alley way and also returned.

Bank heist on Near North Side

On the morning of Sept. 20, a lone robber hit a Chase Bank at 600 N. Dearborn St. According to employees at the bank, a woman believed to be in her late 20s entered the building at around 8:50 a.m. and proceeded to hand one of the tellers a note that read, “Give me all your money and I won’t shoot you,” along with a plastic shopping bag.

The teller took the bag and filled it with an undisclosed amount of money, then handed the bag back to the woman. The offender then asked for the note, which she placed, along with the money bag, into a larger shoulder bag. The woman exited the bank and walked southbound on Dearborn Street.

Employees described the woman as white, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing between 135 and 145 pounds and displaying what looked like pock marks on her face.

Women clip tourist for $50

After leaving a bar in the 400 block of North Orleans Street at around 6 a.m. on Sept. 22, a 24-year-old man from New Jersey told police that he was “enticed” into a car by three women who offered to take him home. After he entered the vehicle, the man said that the women forcibly took his wallet, which contained $50 in cash, and proceeded to throw him back out onto the street.

The car then drove northbound before the victim was able to retrieve a license number or identify the make of the car. Police officers later returned him to a Holiday Inn where he was staying.

Violent encounter at dealership

On the afternoon of Sept. 21, Charles Garrett, a 19-year-old man from Memphis, Tenn., entered a Bentley Motors dealership at 834 N. Rush St. and reportedly caused a “loud, verbal disturbance,” according to witnesses and employees at the establishment.

After allegedly threatening customers and attempting to enter one of the vehicles, Garrett was told to leave by sales staff, at which point he walked to the front entrance of the showroom where he sat on his knees and actively blocked customers who were entering and leaving the dealership.

A salesman flagged down a nearby female security officer from Loyola University to help deal with the situation. The guard, who was an off-duty Chicago police officer, and another female security guard approached Garrett.

Without provocation, according to the police report, Garrett struck the female guard in the face — a blow that warranted 10 stitches to the woman’s upper lip — and ripped off the Loyola security guard’s earring after she tried to subdue him with pepper spray. The two then forced Garrett to the floor and were eventually joined by two police officers, who reportedly used a Taser to subdue Garrett.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
