Police nab armed robber

Police arrested a man suspected of robbing a woman at gunpoint on the 100 block of W. Maple on the evening of September 3. The 21-year old woman and a witness relayed to police that the man, 27, had approached her and stated “Give me your purse or I’ll shoot you,” while pressing the barrel of a silver gun against her stomach. The man fled with her purse, which contained sunglasses, a digital camera, various ID and credit cards and a cell phone. Later that night, patrolling officers on Division Street arrested the man on Division Street, where he was trying to sell the woman’s camera. The purse was recovered from a flower pot on the 100 block of W. Oak Street.

Assault and robbery

On the evening of August 31, a 26-year old woman was attacked and robbed by an unknown suspect on the 1500 block of N. Hudson. The woman was talking on her iPhone when the offender approached her from behind and struck her in the face. The suspect took the woman’s phone, valued at $500, and attempted to take her purse before fleeing. Officers toured the area with negative results.

Liquor stolen

The manager of a bar on the 300 block of W. Hubbard told police that five bottles of alcohol had been stolen from the establishment around 6:30 a.m. on September 2. According to the manager, a security tape showed a man with a tattoo on his arm entering the bar, supposedly through an employee entrance, and taking the bottles, which totaled nearly $150 in value. The bar was not open for business at the time of the robbery, and the only employee on the premise during the break-in was in the basement.

Attack from behind

On the afternoon of September 3, a man walking to his residence on the 1900 block of N. Sheffield was attacked from behind by an unconfirmed number of men. One of the offenders punched the man in the face, causing him to fall, while another emptied his pockets, taking $150 in cash, various ID and credit cards, house keys and a cell phone. The man’s wife heard shouting outside and moments later saw a group of men running through a nearby alley.

Failed burglary

A woman on the 2000 block of N. Burling found evidence that someone had tried to break into her condo unit sometime during the day on September 1. The woman told police that there were pry marks on her back window which caused damage to the metal frame on the screen. Other residents in the building had seen an unknown man loitering around the building for a few hours, she said.
