Attempted shooting in Near North

A 20-year-old Chicago man told police two men he knew attempted to shoot him, possibly because he was involved in an earlier fight with an acquaintance of the offenders.
The man said he was riding his bicycle northbound on the 1400 block of North Burling Street at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, when the two offenders, aged 17 and 19, stopped him and asked for a lighter.
The victim said he didn’t have one, and as he began to leave a white van appeared and cut off his path. Two men exited the vehicle wielding handguns. As the victim turned to run, he told police the gunmen shouted, “Smoke him,” and believed they began pulling the triggers of their guns.
Attempted burglary at Closet Works
On Monday, Aug. 15, an unknown person attempted to break into Closet Works, 2000 N. Clybourn Ave. Police were summoned to the business on Wednesday, Aug. 17, after an employee noticed a large metal plate on the back door was partially pried off.
Flier given, iPhone taken
A 51-year-old Chicago man reported a teenager stole his iPhone as he was sitting at Starbucks, 600 N. State St., at 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
The victim told police the teen gave him a flier, then took the iPhone, which was sitting on a table, and fled with three other people, who were also carrying fliers. The victim estimated the iPhone was worth $500.
Brown Line cell phone robbery
A 20-year-old Chicago man was robbed of his cell phone on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 17, as he rode a southbound Brown Line train.
He told police a teen snatched the Verizon phone, valued at less than $500, from his hands as the train approached the Sedgwick station about 9:30 p.m.
The victim attempted to chase the offender down Sedgwick Street, but lost sight of him. Police were summoned, but officers were unable to locate the suspect.
Copper thief nabbed
A homeless man on parole was arrested Friday morning after he was observed entering a building under construction at 2317 N. Janssen Ave.
A witness told police he saw Robin Booker, 53, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, hop a fence and enter the back door of the building at 11:36 a.m., later exiting with a copper gutter.
Police saw the man fleeing through an alley and apprehended him. Upon booking the suspect, police spoke with the owner of the building, who declined to press felony charges against the suspect. Booker was instead charged with two misdemeanors, burglary and unlawful entry.
Blurry iPhone theft
A 38-year-old Chicago woman said she was robbed of her iPhone, a designer purse and cash when she got in a van with two women she did not know.
The victim, who was intoxicated, said she entered the van shortly after midnight Saturday near 1 W. Superior. Once she was in the van, the two offenders took her items and kicked her out of the vehicle. Police were unable to locate the van or the women.
Residential burglary in Lincoln Park
Two Lincoln Park women reported their apartment was burglarized while they were at work Monday.
The women, both 22, told police they returned to their home on the 2100 block of North Southport Avenue after 6:30 p.m. Monday to find the apartment had been tossed.
Upon review, they found unknown offenders had entered through a rear window and stolen two Apple laptop computers, an iPad and roughly $1,000 worth of jewelry. The thieves then left though the front door.
