A 27-year-old man from Ohio told police that he was attacked and robbed by two men on the corner of State and Superior while walking back to his hotel room at 1:20 a.m. on August 11. After leaving a bar, the victim was approached by two men who asked him for $5. When the victim said he didn’t have it, one of the men struck him in the face repeatedly with the a handgun, while the other man went through his pockets, taking from him the following items: $140 cash, a passport, a wedding ring—valued at $600—and various bank cards. Officers toured the area but did not find the suspects. The man suffered a bruise on the right side of his face and a cut on his lower lip; he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Violent robbery
On the evening of August 10, two women were robbed at gunpoint by two male suspects near the corner of Goethe and Stone. The victims, both 18-years old, told police that the suspects had approached them from behind and produced handguns, striking both of them on the back of the head and ordering them to lie on the ground. One of the offenders shouted “Shut the f*** up or we’ll blow your heads off.” Upon compliance, the offenders took the victims’ purses, which contained cash and cameras, and fled east on Goethe. Police were unable to locate the suspects and the women refused on-scene medical treatment.
Laptop theft
On the morning of August 5, a 61-year-old woman engaged in a struggle with a man who tried to steal her laptop while she sat outside the MacDonald’s on the 100 block of E. Chicago. After a brief scuffle, the man seized the computer from her and fled the property. A security guard at the restaurant pursued the man down the stairs of the red line transit station, stopping him before he got through the turnstile and detaining him until police arrived.
Snatch and grab
A woman had two gold chains stolen from her as she boarded a train on the 200 block of N. Grand on the morning of August 2. She told police that the suspect, a man believed to be in his thirties, took the jewelry off her neck and exited the train at the same stop.
