On Aug. 8, a 60-year-old woman taking a morning walk through a park on the 300 block of East Chicago Avenue was robbed.

An unidentified man ran up to the woman, knocked her to the ground and attempted to take her purse. The victim managed to hold onto her bag, and the offender fled.

Police toured the area but were unable to locate the man, and an inquiry into security footage of the incident from the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago turned up negative.

Robbed at the ATM

While withdrawing money from a lobby ATM just after midnight Aug. 6 at a bank on the 100 block of West Elm Street, a 23-year-old man told police that he was approached by a man with a knife who demanded that he hand over the money, which totaled $400.

The offender, who was believed to be in his early thirties, reached into the man’s back pocket and retrieved the cash before fleeing northbound on Clark Street.

Robber quick on the withdrawal

A man was smoking a cigarette on the sidewalk on the 400 block of North State Street around 2 a.m. on Aug. 5 when a unidentified man pulled up to the curb in a car. The stranger approached the man, shoved a hard object against his ribs and demanded that he hand over his wallet.

The victim, 27, gave him the wallet, which contained three credit cards. The offender then demanded the victim’s PIN number, to which he also complied. The man then got back in his car and drove westbound on Hubbard Street.

The victim immediately contacted his bank to cancel his credit cards, at which point he learned that three withdrawals had already been made, totaling $1,000.

Passenger robs cabbie

A cab driver was robbed at gunpoint by a rider at around 2 a.m. on Aug. 5. The cabbie told police that after driving the offender — a man believed to be in his early twenties — from the corner of Huron and Franklin streets north to Superior Street, the man attempted to pay for the ride with invalid debit card.

After being told that the card couldn’t be used, the offender pulled out a silver handgun and pointed it at the driver. The man then reached into the front passenger side of the cab and took the driver’s messenger bag, which contained medication and $500 in cash, before fleeing the vehicle.

iPad nabbed on train

A man snatched a woman’s iPad at the Brown and Purple lines’ Sedgwick station the evening of Aug. 4.

Officers responding to a call of someone yelling for help arrived at the station to learn that a woman had been robbed.

The victim told police that she was putting the device in her purse when a man snatched it and left the train. The woman attempted to get the iPad back, but she said that the offender fled northbound on the train tracks at the station.

Police toured the area with the victim but were unable to locate the offender. The iPad was valued at $600.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
