Aggressive indoor panhandling ex-con

Officers arrested Juan G. Ramirez, of San Antonio, Texas, for panhandling and disruptive behavior at a restaurant on the 100 block of West Ontario Street on the evening of July 28.

Upon arriving at the establishment, police were told by an employee that Ramirez, 29, had entered the business and began panhandling to patrons after doing the same in front of the restaurant’s entrance.

When asked to leave, Ramirez reported called the employee “bitch” and stated that he was “going to kick his ass,” adding that he had just gotten out of prison and was dangerous.

The offender then began to throw food around the restaurant, alarming the patrons. Ramirez continued to be verbally abusive as officers detained him.


New iPhone stolen outside Apple Store

A 40-year-old woman told police that she had just walked out of the Apple Store at 679 N. Michigan Ave. the evening of Aug. 1 when an unknown man walked up and forcibly grabbed a bag containing a new iPhone out of her hands. The man then fled.

iPhone snatched off dinner table

On the evening of July 28, a 28-year-old woman was dining downtown at the Smith and Wollensky restaurant, 318 N. State St., when two unknown male offenders came up and grabbed her iPhone off the table before fleeing.

iPhone taken after struggle on CTA

A 22-year-old woman had her iPhone stolen from her after a struggle on the CTA the morning of July 29.

Responding to a call of a violent robbery on a CTA train, officers arrived at the Sedgwick Brown and Purple Line station and spoke with the woman, who said that she was sitting in the train when a man tried to pull an iPhone out of her hands right before the doors of the car opened.

When she resisted, the offender, who was believed to be in his early twenties and had a shaved head, grabbed her arms and “pushed them into the railing,” according to the police report. The woman then fell to the ground and the man was able to take the phone, which was valued at $300. The woman said that the man fled on North Sedgwick Street in an unknown direction.

Beauty salon burglarized

Burglars hit a beauty salon on the 1000 block of West North Avenue on the evening of July 27.

The next morning, officers arrived to find that the glass front door of the establishment had been shattered and left ajar. A manager of the store told police that $10,000 worth of designer fragrances had been taken from display shelves in the space.

According to a police report for the incident, the offenders were able to “circumvent” the store’s alarm system. Officers canvassed the area but were unable to find video surveillance footage of the incident and witnesses.

Snazzy bikes stolen near Navy Pier

According to a Chicago Police Department news release sent out on July 28, there has been a recent increase in reported bicycle thefts on the lakefront and around the Navy Pier area.

The report states that “many of these bicycles are very high-end models,” and that locks are typically being removed with a cutting instrument.

The department urges riders to pay special attention when securing their bikes to a stationary object and to use quality locks. It is also recommended that owners register their bicycles with the police department.
