At around 4:20 p.m. on July 21, police responded to a hold-up alarm at a financial services outlet in the 600 block on N. Michigan. Upon arrival, employees told police that a man who had been at the store the previous day came in that afternoon and said to one of the tellers, “I don’t want anyone to get hurt, I have a gun.” The offender, believed to be of Middle Eastern descent and in his late 40s, displayed a semi-automatic handgun hidden under his shirt and told the woman that he was a member of Al-Qaeda and that he would detonate a bomb in a car parked in front if they did not give him all the money in the store. An employee began pushing money though the teller window while another employee in back activated the silent alarm. “No pounds or dollars, give me Euros,” the man said as he put the money in a brown paper bag. The man left with nearly $30,000 in Euros and U.S. dollars. Employees told police that the man had been in the store twice the day before, asking about wiring Euros to France and talking on his cell phone while standing near the exit.
