Police have a list of suspects in connection with a violent attack that occurred on the 500 block of West Elm Street at around 2:30 p.m. on July 6.
A group of adults and teenagers from the Alliance for Community Peace organization were in a nearby city park when a group of between four and six people confronted them. One person from the group, who was wearing a mask, reportedly stated “You should be running.”
The victims attempted to relocate, but were jumped by the gang outside of their building. A fellow employee came out to assist the group and one of the offenders pointed a handgun at him.
Members of the group later told police that they saw another handgun on one of the offenders. The attackers fled to the nearby Francis Cabrini Rowhouses. Two of the witnesses gave police a list of people that they believed to be present in the group of attackers — two 19-year-olds and four male minors, all of whom live in the neighborhood.
Mugged in front of his deli
An 82-year-old Evanston man was attacked by a man and woman early the morning of July 6 outside of a deli where he works in the first block of East Cedar Street.
The man said that the woman approached him on the sidewalk and asked him for some money, to which he replied that he could only give her one dollar. The woman said she needed seven dollars to get to Oak Park, at which point an unknown male appeared and said “We are the police,” before punching the victim in the face and giving him a bloody nose.
The woman began going through the victim’s pockets, retrieving a wallet containing an ID, credit cards and $140 in cash. The man later told police that the male offender took his glasses off his face.
Meanwhile, a man making a delivery to the store heard the commotion and went to investigate. He allegedly saw the two offenders and the victim behind a fence and asked what they were doing, to which the male offender replied “None of your f****** business,” before both offenders fled.
Motorcycle stolen
On the afternoon of July 10, a security guard for the City Colleges of Chicago reported that he returned from running errands to find that his motorcycle had been stolen from the 1500 block of North Clark Street. The man said that his bike, a 2000 model purple Harley Davidson, contained a $300 iPod amplification system and a helmet valued at $175.
Punched and robbed
At around 2:00 a.m. on July 10, a man nearing his home in the 1700 block of North Dayton Street was attacked and robbed by two unknown men believed to be in their twenties.
The man, 24, told police that the offenders approached him and asked for directions and then proceeded to punch him. The attackers took the man’s wallet, iPod and computer before fleeing.
Attempted break-in at high rise
A 78-year-old man told police that it appeared that an offender had tried unsuccessfully to break into his home on the 52nd floor of a building in the 100 block of East Chestnut Street.
Upon returning from a family picnic on the afternoon of July 10, the man and his wife noticed that the door to their unit appeared to be damaged at the lock. The couple reported that nothing was missing from the home.
Robbed on the train
A woman was robbed by two unknown male suspects on a CTA train platform at 8:30 a.m. on July 10.
The victim, 24, told police that one of the offenders approached her at the Chicago Brown Line stop and asked her for the time. When she took out her purse to check her cellphone the other suspect pushed her from behind while the first grabbed her wallet out of her hand. Both offenders then fled.
The woman retreated to her place of employment nearby where her boss called police. The woman described the men as being in their early twenties, with one showing a natural birthmark on his face.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
