At around 1:30 a.m. on July 5, officers responding to a call of a shooting on the corner of Cambridge and Chestnut streets arrived to find a man lying on the ground next to his vehicle.
The victim, a 22-year-old man from 6400 block of South Marshfield Avenue, was bleeding from the back of his head and officers found a spent bullet casing on the ground near the victim. Personnel from a Chicago Fire Department engine were already at the scene performing CPR on the victim before an ambulance arrived to transport the man to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and said to be in critical condition.
An investigation into the matter revealed that the victim’s 7-year-old nephew had been in the car at the time of the shooting. The boy told police that his uncle had been hanging out with a group of people, including a man known as “Rock Head,” when a single gunshot rang out.
The boy said that he didn’t immediately realize that his uncle had been hit, because the group crowded around him, but told police he did notice that Rock Head had left the scene in a vehicle that was parked next to the victim car.
Pulled into an alley and mugged
A 23-year-old man was attempting to hail a cab outside of a hotel in the 500 block of North Michigan Avenue at 4:20 a.m. on July 3 when two men believed to be in their early twenties grabbed him and pulled him into an alley.
The victim, a resident of East Lansing, Michigan, told police that when he attempted to resist the offenders both exclaimed that they had guns, although the man said he did not see any weapons.
One of the offenders held the man while the other went through his pockets, retrieving a wallet containing credit cards, $360 in cash, a Blackberry phone valued at $490 and a passport from India.
The offenders then fled. The victim reported that he heard one of the suspects call the other one “Blackie.” Police searched the area but were unable to locate the offenders.
Robbed in a cab
At 2 a.m. on June 27, a man was sitting in a cab that had stopped on the 500 block of North LaSalle Street when a woman entered the vehicle and demanded that he hand over his ATM card and PIN number.
The victim refused, and the woman threatened that her accomplice would beat him up if he did not comply. A man was standing outside the car and looking at him during the incident, the victim told police.
The victim then gave her the card and PIN number and got out of the cab at an unknown location. The offenders reportedly used the card at 9 locations that day, racking up $2,400 in unauthorized charges.
Robbed and laughed at
At around 4 a.m. on July 3, police were waved down by a man in the 300 block of West Chicago Avenue who reported that he had just been attacked and robbed by an unidentified man.
The victim, 23, said that the offender walked up, punched him in the face and attempted to steal his wallet. As the victim attempted to defend himself, the attacker grabbed a $200 iPhone from his hands and stated “F*** you” and laughed, according to a police report. The man then fled down Franklin Street.
Burglary alert on Near North Side
Officials from the 18th District police station sent out a community alert on June 30 warning residents of a string of home burglaries that recently occurred in the residential area bounded by Clark Street to the east, Halsted Street to the west, Armitage Avenue to the north and Division Street to the south.
According to the release, offenders had entered residences during the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., opening unlocked doors or windows to gain entry.
“The offenders typically target items they can easily carry including money, keys, jewelry, and electronic equipment,” the release reads.
Police encourage residents to keep their doors and windows locked, avoid confronting suspects and to call 911 if they see or hear any suspicious.
Police looking for court advocates
The 18th District Community Policing Office is urging residents to participate as court advocates in a case involving a suspect charged on a count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
On June 27, police arrested an offender after a short foot chase that ended in the 700 block of North Rush Street. Details of the incident were not given in a release sent out by 18th District officials, but according to the statement a gun allegedly belonging to the suspect was recovered following the incident.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
