Tasers used in fights

Police on patrol arrived in the 600 block of N. Franklin May 1 at 1:10 a.m. where they discovered two men fighting. Police approached to separate the men. As they did, one of the men got on top of the other and started pummeling his face and body. Police told the assailant to stop. He refused. An officer approached and the offender kicked the officer in the hand. Another officer then discharged a taser into the offender to subdue him. The man was taken in to custody and his beating victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by ambulance. Police started questioning the tased offender and discovered both men were intoxicated but that neither wished to sign complaints. During their questioning of the first offender, two other men got into a fight nearby. Police asked the men to stop, but they refused. Police approached the men to stop the fight, and one of the men flailed his arms and kicked his foot toward an officer to avoid arrest. Police tased him. Police discovered the second set of men were friends with the first set of fighters and arrested both of them and transported them to the 18th District for processing.

Yoga practitioners ripped off

A man told police he was in the middle of a yoga class at a church in the 300 block of W. Wisconsin May 3 at 7:50 p.m. when another man walked in to the room asking about the class. The questioner then disappeared. After the class, the participants discovered that all their cash had been taken from their wallets, which were located on a coat rack near the front door of the church. A witness told police that she’d seen the offender visit the church for worship services in the last five months. Another witness said the offender looked like a man who’d been entering other churches he attended and committing thefts. Police toured the area, but could not locate the offender.

Woman robbed while parking

A woman was using a parking meter pay box in the 1500 block of N. Hudson April 29 at 2:50 p.m. when two men ran up from behind. One of the men took her cell phone and credit card from her right hand. The second man took her purse and knocked her to the ground. Both offenders fled east down an alley. The woman told police the purse contained $150 and ten blank checks. Police toured the area, but did not locate the offender.

Robber steals car with victim inside

A woman was waiting for her friend in the passenger seat of a parked vehicle on the 800 block of N. State May 3 at 11:30 a.m. when a man approached the driver’s side window, displayed a handgun and said “I’m gonna take you with me.” The man got in the car and drove the woman around the city. After several hours, the victim pretended she was asleep. The man stopped the car, took the woman’s purse containing a cell phone and $240 cash and fled. The woman contacted police from the 5500 block of S. Prairie where the car had stopped.

Man waiting for bus robbed

A man was waiting for a bus in the 1200 block of N. Halsted May 3 at 1:05 a.m. when two men approached him. One asked, “Do you have a light?” One of the men then grabbed the victim from behind and put him in a choke hold while the second man reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. The victim struggled briefly, but was thrown to the ground, and the offenders fled. Police issued an alert for the area, but the offenders were not located.

Men stabbed, assaulted with brick

A man was leaving a corner store with his friend in the 1200 block of N. Cleveland April 30 at 8:25 p.m. when two men approached and tried to hit the friend in the head with a brick. One of the offenders then stabbed the first man in his left arm with an unknown object before running away. Police arrived and asked the victim about the incident. The victim couldn’t provide many details about the offenders and was then transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by a family friend, where he was treated and released. Police toured the area, but did not locate the offenders.
