Woman stops thief on train

A woman was riding the Red Line near the 1200 block of N. Clark on March 15 at 7:10 p.m. when the train stopped and a man riding next to her got up, grabbed her buttocks and then took her briefcase. A struggle ensued over the briefcase and the woman regained control of it. The woman fled from the train and the man followed her. She pushed an emergency button on the platform which sounded an alarm. When she reached the main ticket booth, the offender turned away and ran toward the platform. The victim called 911. Police arrived and interviewed her. During the interview, the offender walked across the street, and the woman pointed him out and said, “That’s the guy that robbed me.” Police arrested the man and transported him to the 18th district station.
Woman assaulted from behind
A woman entered a building on the 300 block of W. Erie March 15 at 5:59 a.m. when a man approached her and pushed her to the ground. The offender said to the victim, “Don’t fight it.” He then took the woman’s purse containing a jade keychain and a cell phone. A security camera caught the offender fleeing north on Orleans after the attack. Police did not find the man.
Bar brawl
A man told police he was in the outdoor patio of a bar located in the 1600 block of N. Wells March 13 at 10:50 p.m. when two men started pushing him. While he was being pushed, he scraped his face on the side of the building and fell on the ground. A third man joined the offenders and started striking the man’s face and kicking him. The victim got up and fled. Police returned to the scene of the crime and tried to locate the offenders, but could not find them. The victim refused medical assistance.
Brick through a truck window
A man waved police down and said he’d just seen a man in a green camouflage vest and jeans throwing a brick through the window of a 1999 Dodge Durango truck in the 2200 block of N. Southport March 14 at 1:45 a.m. While police examined the car, the owner approached and they told him what happened. The owner said the description of the offender matched a known acquaintance who he’d just had an altercation with at a nearby bar. Police toured the area, but did not locate the offender.
House burgled, laptop and cash taken
Police responded to a burglary alarm tripped at a residence located in the 800 block of N. Clark March 13 at 9:03 a.m. When they arrived, they noticed glass broken on the front door. The owner arrived and said that a laptop and $200 was taken from the premises.
Gun possession bust
A police officer was driving east in the 100 block of W. Hubbard March 10 at 4:27 a.m. when he noticed a man urinating near a running vehicle in a nearby alley. The officer stopped and conducted a field interview with the man, who seemed nervous. The man produced two conflicting pieces of identification and refused to answer questions regarding his presence in the alley. The man was placed in to custody for public urination. Police conducted a search of the man’s vehicle and found a loaded .45 caliber handgun with seven live rounds. The offender declined to answer questions regarding the gun. Police transported him to the 18th District station and discovered he had a prior conviction for aggravated discharge of a firearm. The man was charged with public urination and felony possession of a gun.
Garage broken into, bikes wheeled away
A woman woke up, went out to her garage located in the 2100 block of N. Fremont March 9 at 7:30 a.m. and found someone had broken in and stolen two Trek bicycles and a Yamaha three-wheeler.
Drunk pepper sprayed, robbed
A man who had spent the evening drinking at various bars was walking home near 1600 N. Kingsbury March 13 at 7:45 a.m. when a man stopped him and pepper sprayed him in the eyes. Two men driving by picked the victim up and drove him to the 100 block of N. Western. During the drive, they asked the man for his cell phone to call for help. When they dropped the man off, he could not find his cell phone. Nearby gas station employees transported the man to a hospital for treatment.
