Twenty watches stolen in burglary

After being away for several days, a man returned to his condo on the 100 block of West Superior Street on the evening of March 7 to find that thousands of dollars worth of personal items had been stolen from his home.

Among the missing effects were twenty men’s watches, totaling a value of $7,000, two laptop computers and a $300 leather briefcase.

Officers reporting to the home found that a door to a fire stairway in the building had been pried open.

He’s a biter

Police arrested Tony Abernathy, 51, after identifying him as the perpetrator of two random attacks from the evening of March 7.

Officers picked up Abernathy, of the 3700 block of South Indiana Avenue, on a matched description given by a 35-year-old woman who said that he punched her in the back while she was standing at the CTA Brown and Purple Line Armitage El stop.

While conducting a field interview with the Abernathy, officers were also approached by a man who said that Abernathy had tried to kiss him on the neck and then subsequently bit him on the stomach before walking away.

Pepper sprayed and robbed

Two unidentified men attacked and robbed a 24-year-old man on the 400 block of North Wells Street at 1:30 a.m. on March 5.

The man told police that the offenders shot pepper spray in his face and knocked him to the ground before taking his ATM card out of his wallet and fleeing.

The man, who was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, later learned that the stolen card hard been used at an ATM and at a Walmart, with charges totaling $2,600.

DePaul student mugged

A 20-year-old man was attacked by three unknown assailants as he walked through the DePaul University campus at 900 W. Belden Ave. just after midnight on March 3.

The man told police that after being approached by the men, all believed to be in their early twenties, he attempted to flee but was grabbed and stuck on the head by the attackers, who took his iPhone and a bag containing $100 worth of school books.

The victim refused medical treatment.

Apple products snatched

Police recorded at least two incidences of thieves snatching Apple products on trains this week.

In the first case, on the evening of March 2, an 18-year-old student was talking to a friend as his train pulled up to the Red Line Clark and Division stop when an unidentified man, believed to be in his early twenties, grabbed the victim’s iPad from his lap and ran out of the train. The victim told police that his school may be able to track the whereabouts of the device, which was valued at $550.

In the second case, at 6:50 p.m. on March 4, a man grabbed an iPhone from a female passenger on the Brown Line and fled the train as it was stopped at the CTA Sedgwick El stop.
