A 40-year old woman was the victim of a drive-by robbery in the early hours of Feb. 21. Having just parted with her daughter who had handed her $50, the victim was walking down the 1300 block of North Sedgwick Street at around 2:30 a.m. when a group pulled up next to her in a gold-colored 1994 Mercury Marquis displaying handicap plates.

One of the passengers reached out and grabbed the woman by the arm, dragging her along as the offender tried to free the money from her hand. The woman eventually let go of the money and fell to the ground and the car pulled away, stopping down the street where the passengers — three men and a two woman, all believed to be in their early twenties — got out and fled in separate directions. The victim suffered a cut to the lip as a result the fall but refused medical attention.

Hot Water Tower

Police and security had their hands full dealing with trespassers at the Water Tower Place mall at 835 N. Michigan Ave. the afternoon of Feb. 19. At 4:30 p.m., officers arrested Antwon Manning for unlawfully entering the premise. A security guard told officers that Manning, a 19-year-old student, had caused a disturbance in the mall a week earlier and had previously signed a bar notice agreeing not to return.

A few hours later, a 15-year-old student was found on the third floor of the mall after he had been told by security earlier that day to leave and not return for a year. Three teenage boys, one of them 19-year-old Devon Johnson, were detained on similar charges at the mall later that evening.

At 6:45 p.m., security at the mall detained a man for trespassing after agreeing not to return following an incident in December. When police arrived, a security officer informed them that the man been searched and that three bags of cannabis had been found in his pockets. The offender was later put into custody.

Don’t mess with the cops

Two teenage girls were arrested for taking out their aggressions on a police officer the night of Feb. 18. While conducting a premise check on the 1300 block of North Sedgwick Street, the officer was shoved by a 17-year-old girl who was walking by him. The officer was then approached by 20-year-old Kayla Delany, who made threats toward him and stated, “You locked up my man last night.” Both girls were arrested and put into custody.

Car egged

A man reported that his car had been egged while he was driving past the DePaul University campus on 1100 block of West Fullerton Street at 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 19. An employee of the school told the victim and police that he would review security tapes in an effort to identify the offenders.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.

A previous version of this story that appeared online and in print incorrectly named a Water Tower Place security guard as the perpetrator in a case involving trespassing and possession of cannabis. Skyline regrets the error.
