Thieves in the 18th District took to the streets and public transit in a mad dash for Apple products last week.
On January 4, an unknown suspect grabbed an iPhone from a woman riding the Brown Line train. After taking the phone, the victim and witnesses said they saw the offender — a boy believed to be in his late teens — exit the train at the Sedgwick stop and walk across the tracks to get to the other platform. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m.
An unidentified young man snatched an iPhone from a woman on a train near the Chicago stop at 7:05 p.m. on January 7. The woman said that the offender was accompanied by two other men who she did not believe were involved in the theft.
A 22-year old woman had her $750 iPad stolen at a tea shop on the 800 north block of Rush Street on the afternoon of the January 8. The suspect, 18-year-old Danee Brewer, allegedly swiped the device after slamming his hands down on the woman’s table to scare her. He then ran out of the café but was arrested shortly afterward by an off-duty South Bend police officer who witnessed the incident. In custody, Brewer told police that he had planned to sell the iPad to his grandmother or at a local phone store and use the money “to get Pampers or [to] give to his mother.”
A 30-year-old woman was the victim of yet another iPhone snatching which occurred on a CTA train on the afternoon of January 10. The phone was valued at $400.
Copper piping stolen
The superintendent of a construction site on the 1100 west block of Armitage Avenue told police that someone had broken into the site and stolen copper piping. The superintendent said he believed that the offenders gained access by cutting through the fence, adding that the stolen pipes had been cut “cleanly.” The incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. on January 8. No security cameras were present at the site.
Attacking a cop
26-year-old Felix Naples, Jr. was arrested for attacking a police officer during an argument in the early hours of January 9 on the 1200 north block of State Parkway. The officer approached the offender, who was yelling at an unknown person, and told him to calm down, to which Naples allegedly replied by swearing at the officer and lunging at him, pushing him with both hands.
The officer responded by punching Naples in the face, knocking him to the ground and handcuffing him.
‘Blam him’
A 20-year-old Milwaukee resident told police that he had been robbed at gunpoint by two men on the 1600 north block of North Park at 1:43 a.m. on January 9. According to the victim and witnesses, the men, both believed to be in their early twenties, approached the man as he was parking his car.
Upon seeing that one of the men was armed with a handgun, the victim ran toward a group of friends, but dropped to the ground after hearing one of the men say “blam him.” The suspects went through the victim’s pockets, taking a cell phone and approximately $1,400 to $1,500 that he had on him at the time, before they ran away.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
