Cab driver spits on woman

A woman told police that she had an unsavory experience with a cab driver on New Year’s Eve. The woman, 26, said that she was driving on the 400 block of North Clark around at about ten minutes before midnight when the cab driver cut her off.

A verbal altercation ensued, and the cabbie spit on her face and coat, she said. The woman and a witness took down the driver’s car number and contacted someone at the cab company, who said that her complaint would be forwarded to the manager.

Michigan Ave. restaurant bomb threat

At around 4:30 p.m. on January 1, police received a call from an unidentified man who said that a bomb would be set off at a popular restaurant on the 600 block of North Michigan Avenue that evening. Officers did a walk-through of the establishment with the restaurant’s manager, but no evidence of a bomb was found.

$3,000 worth of hotel booze on fake credit card

On the afternoon of December 31, a 29-year-old man walked into a hotel on the 100 block of East Superior and requested a room for two nights, using a pre-paid credit card as payment. Fifteen minutes after entering his room, the man called room service and ordered $3,000 worth of liquor — a request that raised suspicions among employees of the hotel. Following their instincts, the hotel staff pulled up the credit history of the card only to find that the magnetic strip did not match the card, and a further inquiry revealed that the man’s name did not match the account number on the card. The hotel then contacted police, and security held the man until officers arrived to arrest him.

Condo employee choked

An employee of a condo on the 100 block of West Superior told police that he was attacked and choked by a man after a verbal argument around 2:30 a.m. on January 2. Police arrested the accused man — a California resident — on a signed complaint and took him into custody.

Blacked-out woman loses credit card

A woman said her ID and debit card went missing after a night of drinking. On the evening December 29, the woman, 29, and a friend went to a bar on the 300 block of West Erie and had one drink. They then relocated to another bar, where she blacked out soon after arriving. The woman said that she and her friend woke up the next afternoon in her apartment without any memory of what had happened the night before.

Upon realizing that her ID and debit card were missing, the woman checked her account and saw that $36 had been charged without her authorization. A responding officer advised that the complainant seek medical attention.

iPad snatched at coffee shop

After entering a coffee shop on the 1200 block of North Clybourn on the evening of December 28, a man approached the counter as if he was going to order something, then walked over to a female customer and punched her in the stomach and took her iPad. A witness chased the man as he fled the establishment but was unable to track him. Police requested copies of the security camera tapes from the shop. The iPad was valued at $800.

Sexual assault on New Year’s

A woman was sexually assaulted on a train on January 1 around 2:30 a.m. The victim and her boyfriend told police that, as they exited the train, a man put his hands up the woman’s skirt and attempted to conduct a sexual act.

The boyfriend began fighting with the man, which resulted in the offender hitting his head against a wall during the struggle. Several witnesses were able to provide police with a description of the man, who was believed to be roughly 25 years old.
