Free rides for seniors set to expire in August

After being shot down by Gov. Pat Quinn and the general assembly earlier this year, the program that gave senior citizens unlimited free rides on public transportation in Illinois will come to an end on Aug. 12.
The state is putting in place a new “means test” that will only give free rides to low-income seniors who meet the standards for the state’s Circuit Breaker aid program.
Those who meet the income test — $27,610 for an individual, $36,635 for a two-person household and $45,657 for a household of three or more people — will be able to get the free rides.
Anyone qualified should enroll at www.cbrx.il.gov.
Those who don’t qualify for the free rides program later this year will still get 50 percent discount on public transit rides through the Regional Transportation Authority.
