Mega-church coming to Gold Coast

Former Scottish Rite Cathedral bought for $4.6 million

A suburban "mega-church" has its sights set on a move to the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Chicago's affluent Gold Coast neighborhood. The Rolling Meadows-based Harvest Bible Chapel, a non-denominational evangelical church, recently expressed plans to open a branch of its 13,000-member congregation in the historic cathedral at 929 N. Dearborn across from the Newberry Library.

Drive-by robbers steal cash

A 40-year old woman was the victim of a drive-by robbery in the early hours of Feb. 21. Having just parted with her daughter who had handed her $50, the victim was walking down the 1300 block of North Sedgwick Street at around 2:30 a.m. when a group pulled up next to her in a gold-colored 1994 Mercury Marquis displaying handicap plates.

At around 7:45 p.m., a round of applause broke through an otherwise quiet Tuesday night at Grand Central. Michele Smith hadn’t arrived at the Lincoln Park bar yet, but her supporters were already celebrating as the news came that at 61 percent reporting, Smith was at the front of the 43rd Ward aldermanic race with 38 percent of the votes, a 10 point lead over her main competitor, Tim Egan.

Incumbent Ald. Walter Burnett won his fifth term as 27th Ward’s city council member on Tuesday, and by no small margin. He walloped his two challengers, Tom Courtney and GeVonna Fassett, by taking in 71 percent of the vote to their respective 23 and 7 percent tallies.
