Cops arrest knife-wielding man

Brad L. Woodland, of the 4300 block of South Princeton Avenue, was arrested after engaging in a brief standoff with police on Dec. 4.

At around 2:00 a.m., officers arrived on the 100 block of West Division Street to find Woodland, 35, allegedly wielding a 3.5 inch-long knife and refusing to drop the weapon at the command of a police sergeant already on the scene.

As more officers surrounded the suspect, Woodland dropped the blade and dashed across the street toward an unknown man, recklessly obstructing traffic in the process and appearing to have violent intentions toward his target.

Officers were then able to apprehend Woodland, who was suspected of being intoxicated at the time.

Later, while in a processing room at the 18th District police station, the suspect became irate and reportedly told on officer, “I didn’t listen to your sergeant, if she feared for her safety, she should have tazed me because I was out there to do what I was going to do.”

Laptop burgled

On the morning of Dec. 2, a woman reported a burglary at her home on the 2000 block of North Cleveland Avenue.

The woman, 28, told police that at around 9:30 a.m. she left her coach house apartment with the garage door and the door to the unit unlocked at the time.

Upon returning at 11:00 a.m., she found that a laptop was missing from a coffee table at the residence.

The victim waited until evening to report the crime; as such, police did not order fingerprinting for evidence because the scene was contaminated.

Woman robbed outside home

A 27-year-old woman was walking home on the 2300 block of North Commonwealth Avenue on the evening of Dec. 1 when she saw an unknown man walking in the same direction on the opposite side of the street.

When the woman crossed the street to get to her apartment, the man approached her in front of her doorway, at which point he displayed a small black handgun and demanded that she hand over her purse.

She complied, and the offender told her to go into the house and to not look back. The man then fled in an unknown direction. Police later toured the area but were unable to locate the offender.

Cabbie doused with gas

Police arrested Cordell M. Adam-Cheeks, of the 200 block of North Menard Avenue, after he allegedly committed battery against an off-duty cab driver.

At around 3 a.m. on Dec. 3, a taxi driver pumping gas into his car at a station on the 1200 block of North Halsted Street when Cheeks, 23, approached him and asked for a ride.

The driver told him that he wasn’t working at the time, at which point Cheeks allegedly grabbed the gas hose from the driver’s hands and began spraying him on the face and body.

The offender then fled but was apprehended by police shortly after and returned to the scene, where the cab driver indentified him. The driver suffered skin and eye irritation as a result of the attack, but refused medical attention on the scene.

Women flee hotel with man’s wallet

A man from St. Paul, Minn. told police that he was robbed by two women who he met on the evening of Dec. 1.

The man, 52, said that after he brought the unknown women back to his room at a hotel on the 600 block of North Rush Street, the two left at around 4:00 a.m. the next morning, claiming that they were going out for food.

Shortly after, the man found that his wallet was missing, along with four credit cards and $300 in cash that he had in the billfold.

Hotel staff stated that they saw the two women leave in a taxi that was waiting outside the building. The suspects were believed to be in their 20s.
