New slots for boaters

Marina construction expected to start in March

A new marina will be built at Gateway Harbor, between Navy Pier and the Chicago Riverís outlet to Lake Michigan. The Chicago Park District will build a 2,610-foot-long pier atop an existing pier, providing 240 new slips for permanent and transient boaters and 15,500 square feet of restaurant and retail space.

Fake cops busted

Two men came up to a house in the 1200 block of N. Schick Dec. 15 at 3:20 a.m. knocked on the door and said, "Open up. It's the police." The owners of the home saw that the men had handcuffs and a gun, but were not in uniform.

St. Teresa's sees more lining up for food from its pantry

While waiting for the doors to open at the St. Teresa of Avila Church last Friday night, a group of men gathered around outside to discuss their dinner plans for the coming week. A short, perpetually smiling man reverently named Pops pointed out that there would be a free Christmas dinner at St. Paulís Lutheran Church in Evanston the following evening.

Gold Coast high-rise blaze leaves one dead

Two fires on the Near North Side over the last week

The Near North Side has weathered two separate high-rise fires in the past week. The first incident occurred early last Thursday morning at 260 E. Chestnut, a 44-story residential building in the Gold Coast. The second fire, a 2-11 alarm, broke out on Sunday afternoon on the 28th floor of 1455 N. Sandburg Terrace.
