I had wanted to join in a polar bear plunge since first hearing as a teenager about the odd but hardy folk who willingly charged into freezing waters, sometimes for charity but often for no reason other than the lure of the madcap.

Alex Zelchenko, a journalist and longtime Lincoln Park resident, passed away last week at the age of 95. A student of psychology and a World War II veteran, Zelchenko was known for his innate ability to listen, communicate and write - skills which benefited him in his many professions.

Burglary on Belden

A woman returned to her house in the 500 block of W. Belden Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. and noticed her front door was forced open. She walked around her house and found her laptop, iPod, passport and some jewelry missing. Police had no leads.
