Taryn Lombardi, of the 1500 block of West 19th Street, was arrested on Sept. 27 after she attempted to rob a drug store with what was later found to be a phony hand grenade.
At around 3:30 p.m., Lombardi, 26, entered Braun Drugs at 2060 N. Clark. After all the other customers in the store had left, employees of the store told police that she put on a mask, produced the fake grenade and ordered all but one of the workers to line up behind her.
Lombardi then told the remaining cashier to give her valium and money. When she directed another employee to lock the front door, the man ran out of the store to a nearby bank where he contacted police.
At the same time, Lombardi apparently pulled the pin on the grenade and two of the employees attacked her in an attempt to prevent the device from detonating. During the struggled the offender bit one of the employees on the hand.
Police arrived shortly after and arrested Lombardi, who was found to be carrying a stolen iPod at the time. She was later transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital to be treated for wounds she sustained during the altercation.
Trip to the ATM gone bad
At 4 a.m. on Sept. 27, a 39-year-old man walking on the 1200 block of North Clark Street was approached by two men who told him to go to a nearby ATM and withdraw money, and hand it over to them.
The man complied, but when at the ATM he pretended to be unable to withdraw the money. The offenders then took his wallet and removed the contents — which included various credit cards and a set of house keys — and returned the empty wallet to the victim before fleeing.
iRip and run
At 6 p.m. on Oct. 1, two men entered a Verizon Wireless store at 1201 N. Clark St. and began browsing. The men — both believed to be around 20 years old — seemed pleasant, a customer later recalled to police. After looking around for about fifteen minutes, the men each grabbed a training model iPhone from the displays, ripping the phones off the security cords.
The offenders then fled from the building, triggering the store alarm, and ran into a nearby CTA Red Line station.
One of the store’s employees chased the men and caught up with one, who dropped a pair of scissors after a brief struggle before escaping.
Liquor store smash and grab
Police responded to a burglary alarm at Superior Wine and Liquors, at 750 N. Clark St., at around 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 27 to find that the front glass door of the establishment had been smashed and $193 had been taken from the register. Upon searching the store, officers found that the offenders had dropped $7 on the ground while leaving the premises.
Drive-by mugging
After leaving a Domino’s Pizza at 2221 N. Lincoln Ave. at around 10:15 p.m. on Sept. 27, a 28-year-old man was walking up Geneva Terrace when two men pulled up next to him in what looked like a late model 4-door Malibu.
The men, who he had seen hanging around outside of the restaurant, demanded that he hand over his wallet and phone. One of the men made a clicking noise under his shirt to imply that he was carrying a weapon.
The man handed over his belongings and the offenders drove off, at which point he went back to work and contacted police.
When the man called to cancel his credit cards he was notified that a charge of $35 had been made to one of his cards at a gas station.
Failed stick-up
A 27-year-old man from New Hampshire was walking on the 1500 block of North Larrabee Street around 8:15 p.m. on Oct. 2 when an unknown man walked up to him and said “Give me all your s*** or I’ll shoot you.”
The victim — a military employee — ran, and the offender also fled. The man then flagged down a police officer and told him what had happened, and an alert was sent out to patrolling officers.
This summary contains information taken from the crime reports and arrest records of the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
