Emanuel names new top Chicago cop

Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel named his new top cop Monday: Garry McCarthy, former police director of Newark, N.J.
McCarthy, a second-generation policeman who worked his way up through the ranks in New York City’s police force before going across the Hudson River to New Jersey in 2006, oversaw a 7 percent reduction in shootings and a 12 percent drop in murders in his tenure at Newark.
In the mid-’90s, Newark was notorious nationwide as one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S.
Announcing McCarthy as his choice to lead the department Monday morning, Emanuel said he wanted someone who could deliver results, and hoped the city council would confirm him quickly.
“We are right on the doorstep of summer — we all know violent crime increases in the summer,” Emanuel said. “We need leadership ready to go on day one.”
One complaint that came from Chicago’s department under previous police superintendent Jody Weis was that morale was low. McCarthy addressed that head-on at Monday’s press conference.
“Morale comes from within — No one’s ever had to tell me to shave, get up in the morning and work hard. That comes from within,” he said.
McCarthy appears to have a relatively easy path to confirmation, if comments from city council are any indicator.
Emanuel said salary is yet to be worked out, but McCarthy will make less than predecessor Weis’ $310,000 a year.
