Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and if you want to make your valentine red-hot for you, send them for a treat — while showing that you’re sensitive and in tune with their political side — with a Mayoral Massage from Massage Envy.
Through the mayoral election on Feb. 22, Massage Envy locations at 801 W. Diversey Parkway and 345 E. Ohio St. are taking advantage of the heated race by offering four special massages: the Richard M. Daley Hot Stone Massage, the Rahm Emanuel Deep Tissue Massage, the Gery Chico Educational Massage and the Carol Moseley Braun Trigger Point Massage. You can support whichever candidate floats your boat. Or, if you can’t live without Mayor Daley, try the hot stone massage bearing his name, which was my favorite.
It’s named hot stone because, as we all know, the mayor can be somewhat hot-headed at times. The Emanuel is a strong, deep tissue massage, representing Emanuel’s strong personality, which you know I like. The Chico is a basic Swedish massage that’s “educational,” because clients ask questions about the massage therapy process. The Moseley Braun is a trigger point massage alleviating pain through isolated pressure on certain points.
“We’re just trying to have fun with it,” said Joe Davis, a South Loop resident who opened the Diversey location in November with his wife, Jessica. “With the new year and the mayoral election, it’s a fun way to get the word out as part of a wellness regiment. Massage has been around 5,000 years and there are benefits.”
I’m a massage lover, so I agree with Davis that regular massages provide many benefits, including stress relief. And as he reminded me, stress causes other illnesses.
“The power of touch, they’ve done study after study, and there’s really nothing it can’t help with,” said Davis, a transplant from Michigan by way of Texas who began patronizing Massage Envy to battle his back problems. “It improves people’s lifestyles. We’re trying to get people in who think massage is just for the elite.”
I spent about 50 minutes with Jon Redd, a magic-handed massage therapist who gave me a little sampling of each type of candidate. Afterward — not surprisingly — I was relaxed and rejuvenated.
So it’s good to know that Davis is scouting Lake View locations with hopes of opening another Massage Envy by year’s end. And Randy and Wes Yee, owners of Massage Envy’s Streeterville location, plan to open a second location mid-February at 1845 N. Clybourn Ave.
“I don’t believe there’s anyone in the world a massage can’t help,” said Davis.
Winging it… Get your tickets now or very soon — as they go quickly — for the 2nd Annual Wing Madness, a hot chicken wing eating contest between 18th District cops and the city’s firemen being held May 11 at Dick’s Last Resort, 315 N. Dearborn.
Last year’s sold out event raised enough funds to grant wishes for three kids at the Make A Wish Foundation. This year, monies go toward establishing a music therapy program for children with autism at Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago.
The great thing about Wing Madness is 100 percent of the cash raised goes to the charity. Dick’s donates the food and drink, and any expenses not underwritten are paid by co-chairs Kathy Posner and Jason Baumann.
I’m thrilled to be a judge once again with Secretary of State Jesse White, the Chicago Tribune’s Rick Kogan and WCIU TV’s Aly Bockler. For $25, you get food and soft drinks — Cash bar is available. Check out chicagowingmadness.com for more details.
Baby love… Congrats to 43rd Ward aldermanic candidate Tim Egan and his wife, Marlena, on the newest additions to their family: twin sons Connor and Cormac. Their lucky grandma is Marilyn Miglin.
