A number of stores on the Mag Mile were rushed by a series of shoplifting “flash mobs” earlier this month.
According to a Chicago Police Department business relations alert, on Jan. 16 and Jan. 19, teenagers in groups of 15 to 35 “entered various shopping establishments on North Michigan Avenue and grabbed merchandise, then ran from the stores with the stolen items.”
Police made 39 arrests related to the incidents, which the report said were “generated on a social media website.”
Lincoln Ave. restaurants burglarized
Burglars hit two neighboring fast food restaurants in Lincoln Park during the overnight hours between Jan. 23 and 24.
At 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 24, the manager of Jimmy John’s, 2231 N. Lincoln Ave., opened shop to find that the lock cylinder on the door had been removed and put back in place unattached.
The manager reported that the alarm had been dismantled and the hard drive from a computer had been taken. Also missing was the DVR unit from the establishment’s security cameras, which officers later found dismantled near the office.
A safe in the office appeared to be untouched, but the manager reported that $100 had been taken from an open cash register.
Next door, a delivery driver for a Domino’s Pizza arrived to find the front door locks in a similar state. Thieves didn’t find any money in the register but did manage to depart with an office safe containing $150, according to the report.
Would-be robber’s bluff called
At 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 23, a 43-year-old man exiting a CTA Brown Line train at the Sedgwick stop was approached by an unknown male suspect who bumped into him and stated “I’ll shoot your ass, give me your money.”
The victim called his bluff, standing still and refusing to hand over his wallet, and the man fled the station. A CTA employee reportedly saw the suspect, who had a tattoo on the side of his neck and was believed to be in his twenties, loitering outside the train stop before the incident, according to police.
Teens strong-arm woman
Three unknown males robbed a woman in the 700 block of West North Avenue on the evening of Jan. 20. The 25-year-old victim told police that the trio, believed to be in their teens, approached her and demanded that she hand over her belongings, specifically her phone.
One of the offenders grabbed the victim and tried to punch her, but she managed to block the attack. They then took her purse, which contained her keys, an iPhone and various credit cards, and fled.
Apartment burglarized on Bissell
A woman living in the 2100 block of North Bissell came home from work on the evening of Jan. 24 to find that her apartment had been burglarized.
The victim told police that, upon arrival, she saw that her front door was open and that her TV and videogames had been stolen.
Further investigation revealed that the rear door of the apartment appeared to have been forced open.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
