The cold air may have blown in early this year — did it ever leave? — but surely fall will have one or two more warm days in it. And when those happen, take time to indulge one last time in some cold comfort.

Yogen Früz opened a new Loop location earlier this month in a bright, white storefront in the shadow of the Harold Washington Library. Hatched in the yogurt crazed mid-‘80s, this Canadian import’s spin on the mix-ins fad involves a powerful blender able to transform a plain vanilla yogurt into a delectable fruit-infused concoction (blueberry pineapple: yum) in a matter seconds.

The result is light, tart and very possibly even healthy. Vanilla comes in low-fat, no fat and no sugar versions, some with probiotics (think good bacteria) added. They also have a low-fat chocolate.

But don’t be scared off by the brush of health. Choices for what some call junk abound in this customizable experience. There are toppings from Cap’n Crunch and shaved chocolate to graham cracker dust.

Yogen Früz also offers smoothies with and without dairy.

The pan Asian dishes at Joy Yee’s arrive at the table plated with style and the food is plentiful and cheap. But in the warmer months, it’s perfectly acceptable to skip the meal and hit the walk-up window to order from the dauntingly long list of 153 frozen drinks. Their mega-sized smoothie made of ripe cantaloupe is like summer through a straw.

Drink in hand, be it a Watermelon Fresh Fruit Freeze or Avocado Cream Freeze, with or without tapioca, wander the Chinatown Square and window shop. The candy store is equal parts sweets and seafood snacks (they’re good!) and at the home stores, the slipper selection is always unbeatable.

It’s certainly no challenge to find a good Italian ice on Taylor Street, but if you wander off the main drag a little, you’ll get more than just a summer staple.

Carm’s is a simple storefront tucked serving up Italian beef sandwiches, hot dogs and pizza puffs plus ten flavors of housemade Italian Ice.

Sit awhile at one of the tables out front, perhaps savoring a Styrofoam cup of half lemon-half lime, and just listen. Everyone knows Father Michael when he drives by, and isn’t that Carmelo’s son? This is Little Italy in Chicago — the names may be predictable and that is part of the charm.
