The girl without the dragon tattoo

WARMING UP OUR DECEMBER will be the American film version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, and the millions of fans of the late author Stieg Larsson’s exciting books will gladly pay a few dollars to luxuriate in his world.
BUT THE GIRL WITHOUT THE DRAGON TATTOO, his partner of 32 years Eva Gabrielsson, who helped create the trilogy, will not get a dime. Hers is a cautionary tale for single women who love and lose, and the message is “get it in writing.”
STIEG AND EVA WERE INSEPARABLE and shared every detail of the books including The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, said to be worth about $40 million in Larsson’s estate. Today Eva is fighting for a share of it as she bemoans the fact that their decision not to marry left her out in the cold. Sweden does not recognize common-law marriage and so Stieg’s father and brother, with whom he had a fractured relationship, have the rights to his estate.
LARSSON DIED SUDDENLY AT 50 AND LEFT NO WILL. One reason they never wed was because Stieg tried to shield Eva from the neo-Nazi extremists he investigated as a journalist and from other hate groups. She has a new book out, a memoir, There are Things I Want You to Know About Stieg Larsson and Me. Eva is currently working as an architectural consultant, and no, she has no tattoos.
WHAT ADVICE for her and spunky heroine Lisbeth Salander? What every woman should know — get it in writing. You live or work with a man for one year or 20, but unless you have a written commitment, you are out of the picture when it comes to his assets. Spell out what you are to get if he dies or you split, get a witness when he or she signs, and have it notarized. Nothing is iron-clad but a basic letter can spare tears and ruined lives.
EVA HAS ONE GREAT ADVANTAGE — A FOURTH UNFINISHED NOVEL, on his laptop, and she has it in her possession. She has been quoted as saying she will give it up when she “gets her due.” Eva and Stieg lived a great love affair while penning novels, fighting violence against women and corruption in government. There should have been a happier ending.
Gossip, gossip, gossip
WHO WAS THE PLUMP YOUNG WOMAN, dumped by her fiancée, who dieted until she was thin enough to jump out of her high-rise window to her death?
WHO WERE THE STAR-CROSSED TWINS, from a wealthy family, who wanted to change identities but, of course, never could? One brother, tall, blond, handsome, was physically healthy but committed suicide after a messy divorce. The other twin, tall, dark and handsome, and mentally strong, died a slow and agonizing death from Lou Gehrig’s disease.
SHE HAS SAID SHE’S SORRY but Hugh Hefner’s ex-fiancee’s telling Howard Stern that the Playboy tycoon was a zero in the sheets was inexcusable. Hefner handled her refusal to marry him with honesty and humor. Crystal Harris handled it like the low-class broad she is.
WHAT’S GOING ON AT THE ARTS CLUB? We hear director Kathy Cottony is out after 17 years and some banker board members want to make it a businessman’s club.

THE STABBING DEATH of Victoria Frederick, at 3500 N. Lake Shore Drive at 2 a.m. July 26 in 1993, has never been solved and close pal Gloria Evans is hoping the police are checking out similar murders for clues. When serial killers are convicted for similar slayings, Evans sees a chance at finding the man who stabbed Victoria after she had shown condos at Lake Point Towers earlier that day. TV’s interest in “cold cases” like this make it easier to keep the unsolved slayings in the news.
PHONY FASHIONISTAS aren’t painting the town red — they’re painting the soles of their cheaper shoes red so they look like they are wearing expensive Christian Louboutin designer heels. They take bargain footwear and give them a color primping for a classier took. Only slaves to fashion take the trouble.
THE WORLD IS LESS CHIC TODAY because creative hat designer genius Raymond Hudd has died at 86. We know we will see many of his feminine, flattering, artful designs at the annual Parkways Foundation Garden Party luncheon Sept. 8 in Grant Park where wearing chapeaux elevates the event to gilt-edged fashionable history. Carol Prins and April Schink are co-chairs.
WHEN GORGEOUS KATHY O’MALLEY OF GIBSON’S had a birthday, the immediate world helped the heavenly hostess celebrate in style at Moe’s Cantina. And of course, the cake was huge and delicious — without too many candles.
ACTOR JOHN O’HURLEY will be honored by the Sarah Siddons Society at a Ritz gala Oct. 10. He’s everyone’s favorite Peterman from Seinfield madness.

“THE KIDS ARE ALWAYS HUNGRY, teachers have no teeth and work in shacks, but these people smile and are so grateful for any help,” photographer Jennifer Girard tells us after her most recent trip to Haiti. She brings them seeds to plant, money for irrigation and tools for farming. Girard, who flies there every three months, hopes they will grow cabbage, eggplant and peas. She was part of a DePaul U. help program and fell in love with the 45 residents of a town called Bouchron Carre. They have no health care or toilets, never heard of TV and have no books. Jennifer, known for her heart as well as her camera, brings back paintings and beadings which she sells for them. “They are my new family,” she vows. “I must help them survive.”
